Found a some fun reading on this helmet and added a little for some fun reading! You be the judge how accurate or not.
MSA (Mine Safety Appliances) Skullguard Red Fire Captains Helmet, LFD Leather Badge. Has original MSA sticker inside helmet that reads Skullguard. going by sticker The “No Zip Code” Label: Collectors look for the “Pittsburgh, PA” address without a zip code as proof of mid-century authenticity. It places the helmet in the “Golden Age” of fire service memorabilia. Going by liner with drawstring – If your liner has a central drawstring that ties in the middle of the head, it is a definitive 1950s/early 60s design. If the liner uses plastic snaps or buckles, it is likely from the very end of your “Pre-1963” window or slightly later.
The combination of red Skullgard helmet with lining and legible sticker, intact “LFD Captain” leather badge is a nice find. Red paint has its scrapes showing black color coming through, scratches scuffs, leather badge rivets are tarnishing with leather having stains, wearing around edges, number 1 black is wearing off, inside lining looks pretty clean for age with strap showing age cracking but intact. Looks like less then average wear and tear for age to red helmet and leather badge, compared to few others I’ve seen. Zipper and surrounding lining, snaps badge and lining would probable fall apart if you tried to remove them. Leave helmet and display it as is! Or have it professionally restored.
Red “Captain” Identification: In many fire department rank structures, a red helmet specifically identifies a Captain or Company Officer, allowing for quick recognition of leadership on a fire scene. LFD could be anything – Louisville Fire Department or Lexington Fire Department so cant be sure which fire department. Louisville Fire Department would really be very nice!!
Measures 14 1/2″ long, 11 3/4″ wide x 7″ tall. Weight is 1 3/4 pound.
