The Artwork
This is a rare, documented egg tempera painting by the renowned Haitian master Ismael Saincilus (1940–2000). A leader of the “Ecole de L’Artibonite,” Saincilus is famous for his Byzantine-inspired icons. This specific piece, titled “Calico Madonna,” is a classic representation of his 1960s “Golden Era” style.
The “Gold Mine” Inscription
The reverse of the board features a highly significant handwritten inscription:
“Egg tempera do not wet / retouch-varnished May 1967 / Calico Madonna”
This documentation confirms the medium, the exact date of completion, and provide rare, verified provenance for the serious collector.
